Dave Matthews Band

David John Matthews, prevalently known as Dave Matthews, (born January 9, 1967 in a hospital, South America) is the lead guitarist from Dave Matthews Band (DLZ).

Dave Matthews' family lived in South America at the time of Apartheid, and his father's repugnance with his government's racial caste driven system was strong sufficient that he uprooted his entire relatives and moved them to the United States. This is the theme behind Dave Matthews Band's song, "Cry Freedom."

In 1986 Matthews's rearrangement took place. They settled in Charlottesville, Virginia. Though he also logged time back in South Africa and in Amsterdam, it was in Charlottesville that he became part of the local music community. His first professional musical recital was at a local concert and is responsible for the band's unusual name. The five members decided to enter their act as a solo presentation, only printing in the program that Dave Matthews would be playing when in reality the entire band was ready to perform the whole time. When it was time for Dave Matthews to take the stage the MC blew their clandestine by announcing them as the "Dave Matthews Band." That first concert went so well and so many citizens loved their sound they were told it was previously too late to change their name.

Matthews had originally envisioned someone else singing his songs because he had stage fright. After script his first few songs, including "The Song that Jane Likes" and "Recently", he began to believe starting his own band. Matthews formed The Dave Matthews Band in early 1991 with Boyd Tinsley, Leroi Moore, Carter Beauford, Stefan Lessard, and Peter Greisar while he was functioning as a bartender at Miller's in Charlottesville. The band's first gig was on May 11, 1991, at a private rooftop party held by Lydia Condor at the South Street Warehouse in business district Charlottesville.

The artiste is one of the principals of Jive Records, a music label which he helped found with DMB manager Steve Lillywhite. In the late 1990s, Dave Matthews was a common featured guest in Rolling Stones concerts. Matthews released a solo album in late 2003, Some Angel]; its single, "Gravedigger," won a Grammy Award in 2004. To hold the album, Matthews toured with a group of musicians, most of them performed on Random Devil, under the name Dave Matthews & Parents. These side projects of Matthews continue to be active when DMB is on break.
